1 Then the LORD said unto Moses, Now shalt thou see what I will do to Pharaoh: for with a strong hand shall he let them go, and with a strong hand shall he drive them out of his land.

2 And God spake unto Moses, and said unto him, I am the LORD:

3 And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name JEHOVAH was I not known to them.

4 And I have also established my covenant with them, to give them the land of Canaan, the land of their pilgrimage, wherein they were strangers.

5 And I have also heard the groaning of the children of Israel, whom the Egyptians keep in bondage; and I have remembered my covenant.

6 Wherefore say unto the children of Israel, I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will rid you out of their bondage, and I will redeem you with a stretched out arm, and with great judgments:

7 And I will take you to me for a people, and I will be to you a God: and ye shall know that I am the LORD your God, which bringeth you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians.

8 And I will bring you in unto the land, concerning the which I did swear to give it to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob; and I will give it you for an heritage: I am the LORD.

9 And Moses spake so unto the children of Israel: but they hearkened not unto Moses for anguish of spirit, and for cruel bondage.

10 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

11 Go in, speak unto Pharaoh king of Egypt, that he let the children of Israel go out of his land.

12 And Moses spake before the LORD, saying, Behold, the children of Israel have not hearkened unto me; how then shall Pharaoh hear me, who am of uncircumcised lips?

13 And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, and gave them a charge unto the children of Israel, and unto Pharaoh king of Egypt, to bring the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt.

Key Verse: "Wherefore say unto the children of Israel, I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will rid you out of their bondage, and I will redeem you with a stretched out arm, and with great judgments" (Exodus 6:6).

Message

Often times, our predicaments seem insurmountable. With every passing day, the suffering becomes difficult to bear. We might even get to the point when we begin to assume that the Lord has forgotten us; that we are alone, desolate and inconsolable. But God will never forget to overlook the challenges of His children.

Moses and Aaron had gone to Pharaoh, king of Egypt, with the message from God to free the Israelites from bondage. Instead of heeding their demand, he ordered the doubling of their hard labour. Moses was discouraged, but God was only just beginning the process by which He would deliver the Israelites. He reassured Moses of His covenant with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and introduced Himself by the new name of Jehovah. He informed him that He was concerned with the plight of the Israelites, and said He would bring them out of slavery in Egypt as He had promised.

When Moses spoke to the Israelites, they refused to listen to him because of their "anguish of spirit, and... cruel bondage". Moses too was reluctant to go back to Pharaoh with God's message. But God insisted that he should return to the Israelites and Pharaoh with His message of freedom.

Irrespective of the severity of your condition, God is aware of it. It may appear as if the forces against you are too powerful to dislodge or your condition seems too hopeless. Yet God will not leave or forsake His children. He remembers His covenant with them. And just when they think all hope is lost, He arrives in His mighty power to roll away all their problems.

Thought For The Day: Cheer up, God will not leave or forsake you.

Meditation

The implication of the name Jehovah

1. It takes some form of spiritual violence of faith and prayer to receive freedom from avowed enemies or from long time bondage,  v1, Matthew 11:12. "The Kingdom of God suffers violence and the violent takes it by force".

2. Jehovah is the redemptive name of God. Might is not synonymous with willingness to deliver the oppressed.  Almighty God is just an attribute and may not necessarily show willingness or commitment to redeem or deliver. In fact, might may just be used to protect self. The redemptive name Jehovah guarantees His power, willingness and commitment to deliver or redeem from cruel foes, vv2,3.

3. Embedded in the name Jehovah was the covenant to deliver man from any afflictions, evil, and bondages, especially when we cry unto Him for deliverance, vv3-5. Thus delivering people is just part of the name and nature of God.

4. Jehovah, the redemptive name of God, also shows how God will effect deliverance for those who call upon His name. The Redeemer must pay the price equivalent to the value of the person to be redeemed first. This indicates right from the outset that God will make a sacrifice equivalent or more that the value of a soul before deliverance can be possible for man, v6.

5. The name Jehovah, that was newly revealed to Moses, implies total divine ownership of the redeemed. If the Redeemer used His own very blood, as the legal tender in the spiritual market, it is expected that the ransomed souls belong to Him and not to any other. In fact the redeemed don't even have the right of ownership, v7.

6. The redemption demands a change of status and position according to the wish of the Jehovah - Redeemer. Thus the redeemed are translated into new and abundant life through the provisions of the Redeemer, v8.

7. The manifestations of redemption rights and blessings, at times, are not immediate. Persistence in prayer and persistence of faith in His word have no alternative. The promises and covenant are still ever sure, vv12,13.

Hymn: Standing on the promises of God.

1 Standing on the promises of Christ, my King,

Through eternal ages let his praises ring;

Glory in the highest, I will shout and sing,

Standing on the promises of God.

Refrain:

Standing, standing,

Standing on the promises of God, my Savior;

Standing, standing,

I'm standing on the promises of God.

2 Standing on the promises that cannot fail.

When the howling storms of doubt and fear assail,

By the living Word of God I shall prevail,

Standing on the promises of God.

3 Standing on the promises of Christ, the Lord,

Bound to him eternally by love's strong cord,

Overcoming daily with the Spirit's sword,

Standing on the promises of God.

4 Standing on the promises I cannot fall,

List'ning ev'ry moment to the Spirit's call,

Resting in my Savior as my all in all,

Standing on the promises of God.
